House on wheels, touring car, spin hut, just a few synonyms for the caravan. The Caravan is of course today’s camp no longer imagine, but how did it start with the caravan? I take you on a journey through time. In addition, I give you the word my colleague Gerrit. Gerrit has been working for 49! Years at Obelink, mainly in the trailer Department. You can already imagine that he has seen several changes over the course of time.
The origin of the caravan
The word ‘caravan’ karawan comes from the Arabic word (Caravan) and the word ‘karawan’ was used to describe a group of people who travelled in the desert. Who built exactly the first caravan, is not entirely clear. Some historians say that Napoleon was the first who used a caravan, for meetings with his warlords, for the storage of documents and for NAPs. Other historians writing about James Sanger, a circus performer who supposedly went through with his family. At that time, around the year 1840 around several cottages were built on wheels for artists travelling around and dealers. These houses or cars were pulled by horses away. It is definitely sure that the Bristol carriage company (BCC) developed the first luxury car in 1884, with the purpose, to spend time outdoors. The name of this first car was’ the Wanderer’. This car and the cars that built shortly thereafter, BCC were tailor-made cars for the ‘ upper class’.
Development of the caravan
At the beginning of the 20th century emerged here and there caravan clubs. After the caravan initially only for the richer people was possible, the caravan was in 30 years for the ‘ middle class’ can be reached. The caravan has been streamlined and comfortable. The car replaced the horse as a tug of the caravan. Because of the second world war, the production of caravans temporarily came to a stop, but after the war, the production was underway again gradually. Because the wealth increased, more and more people bought a caravan. The caravan industry was very affected by the oil crisis (1973/1974). Many caravan manufacturer went bankrupt and it seems, as a result, the production is again a. The manufacturer who survived caravan then developed another kind, namely models, which were lighter and more compact. The production increased again significantly by this renewal. You can briefly summarize the development of the Caravan as the beginning of an Aufenthaltsmittel for the ‘happy few’ to holiday accommodation for the ‘normal’ man.
Modified caravan through the eyes of a loyal employee of Obelink
Gerrit can remember it as if it were yesterday. “In 1974 we started with the first caravan of brand Kanani. Some years later we recorded Adriatic in our range. These models arrived by train in Winterswijk. We had to first cut off the rusty wires and completely clean the caravan.” Not long after IFA welcomed caravans. “They were square models from East Germany. The price was 2990,-Gulden, I remember it”, says Gerrit. Not much later came the hobby caravans can be found still at Obelink.
According to Gerrit much has changed, in the nearly 50 years that he works at Obelink, in the field of sleeping bags. “The today’s Caravan is much luxury. “In the first years of a heater or a fridge was non-standard and certainly never a toilet.” The first caravan goods mainly for sleep, sit around and cook determines cooking facilities were there already. “Earlier we were a flower pot vice versa on the gas stove. The pot was quite hot, so it was fairly warm in the caravan. Nowadays with circulation heating everywhere warm air in the trailer. It is so much more pleasant.” What is also striking Gerrit, is that trailer have become gradually bigger, wider, and taller. “Previously the width of the caravan was about two meters and stood across the bed. “You had to pull off the caravan walls limited by the width, so you can imagine that a person who is 1.95 meters long, could not stretch his legs!” Gerrit was formerly on vacation with his family with the trailer on the road. “I had a Datsun and then a Simca first. Our caravan was suitable for three persons, but in the evening we sat with eight people in the caravan without problems. Now that has changed considerably. My daughter for example goes with her husband for two with a caravan holiday, but in the trailer!” The today’s Caravan, as indicated, is much luxury as the former. Many models are equipped with air conditioning and a toilet is installed by default. “There are even automatic boring restraints and we buy hardly a caravan without a manoeuvring aid,” so Gerrit specifies. He expects no big changes in short term. “That was never really the case. Changes were always gradually.”
