The world is a vast and diverse place, with a wide range of geographical features. It is divided into seven major land masses – Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America and South America – each with its own unique climate and topography. Africa is the second largest continent in the world, covering an area of 11.7 million square miles. It is home to some of the most varied landscapes on Earth, from rolling savannahs and snow-capped mountains to dense rainforests and deserts. It also has some of the longest rivers in the world such as The Nile and The Congo. Antarctica is a continent covered almost entirely by ice sheets that are up to two miles thick in some places. Its frigid environment makes it one of the most inhospitable places on earth; however it is home to some unique wildlife such as penguins, seals, whales and other species that have adapted to living in these extreme conditions. Asia is the largest continent in terms of population and covers an area of 17 million square miles. Its landscape ranges from high mountain ranges like the Himalayas to vast plains like those found in Mongolia or China’s Gobi Desert. The region also contains many large bodies of water such as The Caspian Sea and The Aral Sea as well as numerous islands including Japan’s Ryukyu Islands or Indonesia’s thousands of islands scattered throughout its archipelago. Australia/Oceania consists mainly of small islands located off the coast of Australia as well as parts of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea which are located on separate landmasses within Oceania itself. This region has a wide variety of landscapes including tropical rainforests found on many island chains like Fiji or Vanuatu as well as deserts found inland such as Australia’s Simpson Desert or New Zealand’s Otago Deserts. Europe covers an area of 3 million square miles and its geography can be divided into three main regions: Western Europe which includes countries like France or Germany; Central Europe which includes countries like Poland or Hungary; and Eastern Europe which includes countries like Russia or Ukraine. This region features varied landscapes from coastal areas along the Mediterranean Sea to mountain ranges such as The Alps that run through several European countries including Switzerland, Austria and Italy. North America covers an area just over 9 million square miles making it the third-largest continent on Earth
