Fundamentals of Cycling

Born from the idea of meeting the human need, in 1855 in France, Pierre Michaux improved on his first bicycle. And since then, the bicycle became for many as a means of transportation because of their easy driving and high mobility, where the whole of your performance depends on who is pedaling since there is no engine.

Fundamentals of Cycling

However the bike is not used only as a means of transport, there is a sport that involves the bike, and this sport is cycling.

There are four types of cycling: road cycling, track cycling, mountain biking and cycling duathlon/triatrlo.

The types of evidence vary according to the modality of the competition, where we have road-tested the test against the clock, these can be individual or in a team, we also have uphill, downhill, freeride, enduro, marathon and cross-country.

We also have speed individual or by teams, and the persecution of the individual or by team, short distance and long distance.

Talking in detail about the types of cycling, was quoted in the cycling road that is in evidence long occurred on the road, as the name suggests.

The bike should have 7kg of weight already which is made of carbon frame, the handlebars are low, to help the athlete to have less air resistance, which forces the athlete to stay curved.

The evidence of road cycling consists of individual disputes in the categories: male and female, and the proofs are divided in two ways; race: the winner is who arrives first, with the distance of the 241,5 km in the male and 141km in the female; time attack: the winner is who end the race in the shortest time, for the male the distance is 54.5 km and in the female 29.8 km.

It is important to remember that the whole route must have at least 10km of dimension. There are cases in which the dispute can be made in the circuit of 3 km, since the distance to travel undergoes variations because of the number of turns that the rider needs to comply with. 3 5km, you must give 3 laps, 5 to 8km should be given 5 laps and 8-10km should be 8 laps.

The track cycling consists of a proof done in a velodrome where the speed is the main factor for the athlete to beat in this mode.

Within the track cycling we have a few ways to accomplish this proof, which are:

  • Sprint, the race the fastest of the sport, where two riders do three laps on the track but only the last is timed, and who cross the finish line first wins;
  • Persecution of Individual, it is when two cyclists goes in the opposite positions on the track, who overcome first the other wins;
  • Persecution by the Teams, is equal to evidence of persecution of the individual, only changing the fact be contested by four athletes from each team;
  • Keirin, the proof that you need help with a bike and six cyclists ride behind the vehicle that serves to control the speed of the athletes, maintaining 30km/h for men and 25km/h for women;
  • And finally, the novelty, the Omnium, which is divided into six evidence of a time-trial, points, pursuit and race, a curious fact is that this dispute lasts for six days. The winner of each round sum of a point and at the end of the competition, whoever has the most points wins.

The mountain biking or mountain biking consists of conducting paths through the trails of the earth, or places with little stability to go with the bike, it is really a challenge to fulfill.

The main differences of mountain biking and road cycling is that the cycling mountain bikes have tires with thicker shock absorbers in the rear and to the front in order to lessen the impact absorbed during the trail.

Combining the weight of the bicycles that weigh between 8kg and 9kg, the time proves that it is 1h30m to 1h45m that vary between 4 and 6km, and with the track having that required 85% of elevations and slopes, this mode causes the athlete has to show its maximum performance.

Triathlon

Finalizing the types of cycling, we are cycling duathlon/triathlon, which consists of evidence divided into steps, where in the first step we have the race, the second stage enters the cycling and in the last step back to the race, all in accordance with the International Union of Triathlon.

What differs from the duathlon from the triathlon is that in the duathlon the last of which is race, in a triathlon is swimming.

In the duathlon distances are divided into short, medium and long, taking in the short distance 5km running, 20km cycling and 2.5 km of the race, on average the distance is 10km run, 40km cycling and 5km of running and in long are 10km run, 150km cycle and 30km of the race.

The position in which the athlete is on the bike is also of paramount importance for a better performance. The adjustment of the basic position is a priority factor to start the practice of cycling, depends on the biotype of the athlete and of the sport. The position can be very variable, it is not the same thing for all cyclists, making it something very personal.

Within the types of cycling we have the functions of the cyclist in each modality. The functions in cycling on the road for example, can be: healer, mountaineer, gregarious, and sprinter.

And in addition to the functions there are also techniques to be followed, as for example the formation to break the wind, which is called the escalera or achilon and the formation of trading simple or compound, named respectively ron de vous and pace line.

However, not all are athletes or engage in cycling to go to the olympics, there are people who tend to wander around the city by bike, or going to the market, or even to exercise and enjoy the scenery of the city.

For these people, it is essential to take care of that is something that is also part of the fundamentals of cycling, which are the safety standards, and those standards need to be followed strictly.

In addition to always keep yourself on the right side of the road, the cyclist should also ride always by the side of the road, cycling always in the direction of the road, and flag any movement and/or object in the pathway.

Conclusion

By following these basics there is a chance to reduce accidents, such as pedestrian accidents or falls. We can’t forget the safety equipment, they are of paramount importance to ensure a safe experience.

This is a mandatory we have the helmet, other items that are not mandatory but they will make a big difference is the gloves.

It is necessary to always use appropriate clothing for such sport, sunglasses, both to prevent glare but also to avoid that something reaches the eyes and eventually make you fall off the bike, sneaker, and radio, so as not to lose the communication with your team team or team of friends that are of the city on the bike with you.

To know if your bike is able to rotate is also one of the fundamentals of cycling, because if the bike is in bad conditions can result in any financial loss as a physical impairment that are linked to crashes, injuries, raladuras, among others.

It is important to examine the tires, verify if the air chamber has patches or if it is stuck, check the quality of the current, if it is not rusty or damaged, to regulate the brakes and gears and if all this is working perfectly, your bike is ready to ride, now just enjoy.
